New to Mountain biking

I've become a pretty avid road biker the last few years and thought I would try mountain biking. I realize it's late in the year, but, I will give it a go this weekend.

I dove in head first and bought a Trek 4300. Hopefully it's good enough for a novice like myself.

Any pointers anyone would like to share??

Backyard Bicycles at Highway 12 in LaGrange is a mile or so from the trailhead. Cool place. Crystal Ridge is also very nice. I think that the John Muir website is www.southernkettles.org, but I could be wrong. Mountain biking season continues through the winter. The is a festival at John Muir in January. We do it in the snow, which is a HOOT! The only really bad condition is mud, so it will shut down in March and April. Keep your head up and have a blast!

Comment by Chris Kostka on November 7, 2011 at 2:35pm: Welcome! I think a 4300 should be a good enough bike to start with. I started with a trek 820 which is a step below the 4300. You won't be able to do anything too dramatic with a 4300, but you will be able to have a really good time with it that's for sure. Good started trails are the Harley Hills right off Capital just west of highway 100, also Hoyt Park have some good beginner trails. I would also recommend going to Ray's indoor mountain bike park on 76th st. this winter to hone your skills. I find that it is a good way to get used to your bike, and to advance your skills while pushing your self in a safe environment. Have fun and shred it!

Comment by Dennis Zlosel on November 7, 2011 at 3:45pm: Thanks guys. I did try the beginner trail near UW Parkside last weekend. Worked out great and gave me a chance give it a whirl. Had a blast. I will give the trails you both mention a whirl soon.
